This advance poster for Quentin Tarantino’s classic Pulp Fiction is one of the most sought-after and valuable modern posters. This is not only because Pulp Fiction is one of the most important films in the 90s, but also because this poster was recalled by the studio before they changed the design.
Collectors refer to this version as the “Lucky Strikes” poster because it features a package of “Lucky Strikes” cigarettes in the lower left. It also features a paperback copy of “Harlot in the Heart”.
After Miramax released this poster to theaters, RJ Reynolds (the manufacturer of Lucky Strikes cigarettes) threatened to sue Miramax for featuring its cigarettes without its permission. To end the litigation threat, Miramax ordered theaters to return all copies of this poster and remade a new version with a generic pack of cigarettes.
However, some Lucky Strikes posters have survived, maybe it’s because some theater employees kept the posters and lied about destroying them, or the insiders at Miramax kept the posters to themselves. All in all, this rare version has become the most desirable to collectors, and, not surprisingly, lots of fake reprints also made their way into the collecting hobby.
Fortunately, there is some guidance on how to authenticate this rare poster. You can find the tips at this link.
